from the Director:
Three Exhibits
I just want to remind you all that there are currently three exhibits in the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center worthy of your attention.

In the Rosenwald Gallery on the 6th floor is the wonderful Textual Spaces: an Architecture of Reading exhibit designed by Andrea Gottschalk and curated by a Penn student, Brooke Palmieri, with help and guidance from staff in RBML - particularly John Pollack and Lynne Farrington.

The Eugene Ormandy Gallery on the 4th floor is home to an exhibit entitled: Francis Johnson: Music Master of Early Philadelphia. Mr. Johnson was an early 19th Century Philadelphia bandleader and composer who, as an African American, had to surmount the very real obstacles of prejudice and segregation during his rise to international renown. His is a very interesting, and not all that well known, story which the exhibition curator, Dick Griscom, has told well.

Finally, the latest exhibition in the Kamin Gallery on the 1st floor highlights Recent Additions to the Rare Book and Manuscript Library. I think you'll be impressed at the wide range of materials that have been added by the curators over the last year.

I bring all of this to your attention partly to highlight the incredible work of our exhibition and curatorial staff. They make it look effortless but, believe me, each exhibition is a trial in its own way. It also gives me an opportunity to urge you to take advantage of your proximity to these exhibitions and the ones that will be mounted in the future. This kind of access to our special collections is another great reason for being part of an academic library environment!
