Doug Smullens Changes coming to POBOX and MAIL.MED email, part 2
Based on feedback from several staff members, I'm sending out the
following additional information regarding the coming changes to POBOX
and MAIL.MED email.
The password you are resetting is not your Pennkey. You are resetting
the password that is used for non-webmail access to your POBOX or to
MAIL.MED email.
WEBMAIL - If you only access your email via webmail you do not need to
reset your POBOX or MAIL.MED password. Access to webmail is granted by
using your Pennkey which is not affected by the coming changes. After
ISC makes their changes, you'll still be able to access webmail using
your Pennkey.
Non Personal Email Accounts - Many Library units have non-personal email
addresses used for a variety of services. Passwords for these accounts
need to be reset. I'll be sending a message out later today to the
owners of these accounts with instructions about how to reset the
passwords. If you're in charge of one of these accounts and don't
receive a message from me before the end of the day, please let me know.
Very Old Passwords - If you've been using the same password to access
your email for more then five years, you may have a problem when you try
to reset the password. In 2003 ISC increased the complexity
requirements for email passwords, but allowed old users to keep their
existing ones. However, the system will not allow users to reset to
these non-complex passwords and users in this situation will need to
choose something new.
Please contact the Helpdesk (libtech@pobox.upenn.edu) with questions or
concerns.

Molly Gastinger Penn Reading Project 2008
Hi all,
Every year's class of incoming freshmen participate in the Penn Reading
Project, which brings together the entire freshmen class with members of
Penn’s faculty (and librarians!) to discuss a single book. This year’s
book is Neil Shubin's Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year
History of the Human Body. www.upenn.edu/nso/prp/fish/.
For the past several years Leslie Vallhonrat has worked with a number
of library staff to create websites showcasing library resources in
support of the Penn Reading Project. This year's library PRP site is now
online: www.library.upenn.edu/courseware/pennreading/. If
you have read the book or are interested in learning more about evolution, the
human body and the fossil record, you might find it interesting.

The retirement party in honor of Stephen Lehmann has been changed to Tuesday, August 5th from 2:30-4:00pm in the Rosenwald Gallery, RBML, 6th floor. We thought that this date and time would accommodate more staff rather than the previously announced Friday afternoon, July 25th. Let's give him a royal welcome back on August 5th!

Arthur Kiron New Judaica Web-Exhibit! Jewish & Other Imperial Cultures in Late Antiquity
The Center for Advanced Judaic Studies and the Penn Libraries have just made
public their 2007-08 web exhibit: "Jewish & Other Imperial Cultures in Late
Antiquity."
In this exhibit, scholars of the classical world grapple with the complex and
multifarious material sources and received texts upon which are understanding of
the Roman empire and its minorities is built. In contrast to earlier generations
of studies of the rabbis and their world, this past year's CAJS Fellows focused
on the imperial context of which Judaism was but one small piece. This approach
produced vigorous, new challenges to the kinds of evidence and questions
traditionally applied to the study of Judaism in Antiquity, an era of seminal
transformation in Jewish culture, law, society, art, and practice.
To view this on-line exhibition, go to: www.library.upenn.edu/exhibits/cajs/fellows08

Doug Smullens *** Changes to Wireless Access on Campus, Final Chapter ***
The migration from the old wireless-pennnet system to AirPennNet
happened last Monday. In the past week, staff have encountered several
important aspects of the new system that merit further explanation.
We've also noted that many students seem to be coming to the Libraries
specifically to get assistance.
AirPennNet-Guest Network
When patrons view available wireless networks in the Libraries they will
see AirPennNet and also AirPennNet-Guest. Unlike the standard
AirPennNet service, traffic on the Guest network is not encrypted and so
shouldn't be used in the long term. This service does not require any
special software or extensive configuration. Simply join the
AirPennNet-Guest wireless network and launch a web browser. You will
automatically be directed to a secure logon page where you can
authenticate using your PennKey. Once authenticated, you'll have full
Internet access.
PLEASE NOTE: The first time you authenticate to use the AirPennNet-Guest
network in any given week, there will be a delay of three minutes before
you can access the Internet. This is the time it takes to register your
computer on the network. You will only experience this the first time
you use the service in any given week.
I've updated the AirPennNet webpage with this information.
www.library.upenn.edu/locations/airpennnet.html
How to get the AirPennNet software if you can't get on the network
without the software.
Several people have noted this apparent Catch-22. The simple answer is
to join AirPennNet-Guest, download and configure the software, then
switch to AirPennNet. The software is also available on the PennConnect
CD produced by ISC. If you'd like some copies for your Library, send
requests to libtech@pobox.upenn.edu.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Doug Smullens Changes to Wireless Access on Campus
Yesterday I sent out a general announcement about the transition of our
wireless networks from wireless-pennnet to the new AirPennNet service.
Here's a brief recap.
Wireless PennNet, the web-authenticated wireless network available in
spaces around the Libraries such as the Biomedical, Fine Arts, and Van
Pelt Libraries, will be retired on June 30th 2008.
AirPennNet, which has been available in the same locations since early
January, will continue to be available as the new primary wireless
network on campus. AirPennNet is also scheduled to replace AirSAS and
will be extended to SEAS buildings, where it will co-exist with AirSEAS.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Aleta Arthurs Call for volunteers!!! Freshman Library Social- August 29, 2008
Good Morning All,
The Library will once again host the Penn Library Social for all incoming freshmen on Friday, August 29, 7-9pm in Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center. This event-—part of the University's New Student Orientation program—-is our annual party for the incoming class and includes a DJ, food, and scavenger hunt prizes. It's our chance to show off our wonderful facility and staff. Last year we had over 1800 freshmen in the building during the 2-hour party.
This event cannot happen without staff assistance and I am once again soliciting your help. We need volunteers to set up, greet the students, provide directional information, serve food, and work at scavenger hunt locations. As always, in return for your time—-this is *strictly volunteer*—-you will receive a Penn Library Social t-shirt and an invitation to the volunteers' pre-Social pizza party. You will also have a great time—-guaranteed. Those of you who have helped in passed years know what's in store, but if you have been unable to participate, please consider joining the fun this year!
If you are able to volunteer, please respond to this email and mark the date on your calendar. More information will be forthcoming later in the summer.
Thanks in advance for your help and enthusiasm.

Martha Brogan Drexel Intern wins ACRL award
I am happy to announce that Brigitte Weinsteiger, Penn Libraries' collection development Drexel intern, won a $1,000 award from the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL/DVC) in May. Given in recognition of a future academic librarian, the award guidelines require applicants to write a brief essay about an ethical issue facing academic libraries. Brigitte chose to consider issues raised by "The Open Access Institutional Repository." Her essay will appear in the Fall 2008 issue of the ACRL/DVC newsletter, available online at: http://www.acrldvc.org/newsletter.htm Here is a preview of Brigitte's conclusion:
Academic librarians today are in a pivotal position to not only champion open access, but also to encourage sensible discussion of these very plausible developments. Their ethical obligation to provide continued access to information depends on it. Thorough analysis and evaluation of the possible repercussions of any potential solution will help librarians and their institutions make thoughtful, deliberate choices in creation of a sustainable scholarly communication model for the 21st century.
Congratulations, Brigitte!

Shawn Martin Copyright Workshop July 16
Hello everyone,
This is just a quick note to let you know that I'll be giving a
copyright workshop on Wednesday, July 16, from 11:00 to noon in the
Meyerson Conference Room of Van Pelt Library on copyright basics (quick
description below).
Copyright Basics, or, Is this legal?
There is lots of confusion on the complex system of copyright laws
currently in use. What is fair use? Can we make copies of things for
classes, conferences, or preservation? Doesn't the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act make everything illegal? How do I explain all of this to
faculty members? This workshop will cover some of the principles of
copyright law and what the library is planning to do and could do to
help librarians and faculty become more engaged in issues of copyright
and intellectual property. Come prepared with questions and discussion
points.
This invitation is extended to all professional and support staff of the
Libraries with the usual provision that operational requirements of all
units must be met and supervisory approval obtained in advance of the
session.
Hope to see you there.

Help Desk request
A miscommunication occurred June 4 causing the Library Truck
Delivery staff to deliver a very large box to an incorrect location.
The direction/request to the Help Desk was verbal and not in a ticket.
Also a staff member said he RARELY gets acknowledgments from the Help
Desk regarding problems experienced and reported. These issues are
major concerns for the Help Desk staff.
We at the Help Desk would prefer that your requests for purchases,
services, and other assistance would be sent to us by using the
following email address: libtech@pobox.upenn.edu. This assures that we
clearly understand your request and that all details can be addressed.
If you need to place a request verbally, please expect a confirmation
from Footprints or Libtech reply within the hour. If a Foot Prints
confirmation is not received, assume that your request was not
addressed, and that you should contact the Help Desk right away. This
will prevent misunderstandings and will ensure that requests do not fall
through the cracks. It also allows the Help Desk staff to be accountable
for following through on any given request.
This may seem a little extreme but efficiency is key at the Help Desk.
Thank You

Martha Brogan Stephen Lehmann's Retirement in July 2008
It is with mixed emotions that I announce Stephen Lehmann's retirement from Penn Libraries, effective July 31, 2008. Stephen's career at Penn spans twenty-one years, arriving here in 1987 as a Reference Librarian from Swarthmore College and culminating as Penn's Librarian & Coordinator of Humanities Collections.
Despite his protests to the contrary, a party in Stephen's honor will be held on Friday, July 25, from 3:30 to 5:30PM in the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, 6th floor, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center.
With Stephen's retirement, I am pleased to announce the creation of the Emeritus Librarian Fund (ELF), established to recognize the legacy of retired Penn Libraries staff. This collection fund is dedicated to the acquisition, delivery, and preservation of multidisciplinary scholarly resources in all formats. Please direct queries to me or Kristin Winch.
A national search is underway to fill his position,
http://www.library.upenn.edu/employment/professional/humanitieslibrarian.html. Interim plans will be announced soon.
Stephen received his BA, MA, and MLS from the University of California-Berkeley. After teaching in Lesotho as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years, Stephen earned an Ed.M. from Harvard University. Choosing to dedicate his professional career to librarianship, Stephen accepted appointment as a Cataloger at UC-San Diego in 1977 before becoming the Modern Languages Bibliographer at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1979.
An author, reviewer, and translator, Stephen has also contributed to the wider profession through his affiliation with the Western European Specialists Section (WESS) of ACRL, serving as Chair in 1998. In 2003, Oxford University Press published to critical acclaim, Rudolf Serkin: A Life, which Stephen co-authored with Swarthmore's Scheuer Family Professor of Humanities, Marion Faber, and to which Paul Farber, Head of the Rosengarten Reserve & Undergraduate Study Center in Penn Libraries, contributed a 40-page discography.
A consummate humanist by profession and personal persuasion, Stephen has profoundly shaped Penn's collections over decades past for the benefit of current and future generations of scholars. From 2004 through 2006, Stephen ably served as the Chair of Penn Libraries' Collection Development Council. Recognizing the importance of preserving digital resources, in 2007 Stephen advocated for a standing library committee to monitor national e-journal archiving initiativesand was rewarded by becoming the Task Force's inaugural Chair.
As a colleague, friend, and mentor, Stephen's daily presence will be greatly missed by the Penn library and academic community. However, I anticipate that we will not have heard the last from Stephen as he is liberated into retirement. He looks forward to spending more time with his family and babysitting his granddaughter, but his yen for learning and self-improvement will, no doubt, translate into notable, creative endeavors.

Martha Brogan Congrats and Adieu, Jidong Yang
Good morning,
It is my bittersweet duty to announce Jidong Yang's resignation from the Penn Libraries effective June 30, 2008. Jidong has accepted appointment as Head of the Asia Library, www.lib.umich.edu/asia/, at the University of Michigan. Since his graduation from Penn in 2000 with a PhD in East Asian Studies, Jidong has been managing Penn Libraries' Chinese collection and providing services to China-related academic programs across Penn's schools and departments. He will receive his MS in Library and Information Science from Rutgers University tomorrow (Tuesday, May 20th)! During his eight-year tenure as the Chinese Studies Librarian at Penn, Jidong has earned the respect of his colleagues in the Libraries as well as the East Asian community of scholars at Penn and beyond. We extend our congratulations to Jidong on his career advancement at the University of Michigan.
A farewell party will be held on Tuesday morning, June 17th, from 10 to 11am in the Meyerson Conference Room. Please join us then to congratulate Jidong and bid him farewell for the Midwest. Jidong's last day at work is June 20th.
A national search will be conducted to fill this vacancy. Interim plans will be announced soon.

Important Announcement!
All,
In case you haven't already heard this from other sources, I regretfully have to announce that Valerie Pena has decided to retire from the Penn Libraries as of June 30th , 2008. I suppose that there is an inevitability about this but it is hard to imagine life in the Libraries without Val's presence. Actually, since she was both an undergraduate and graduate student at Penn, it's hard to imagine her no longer being an active part of the whole Penn community!
I know you will agree that Val has had a tremendous impact on the Penn Libraries and on those of us who have had the distinct pleasure of working beside her over these many years. So much of who we are as a library community and how we interrelate is the result of Val's influence. Her use of reason rather than emotion and her quintessential fairness are attributes that have stood her and all of us in good stead over the years.
In many ways Val is irreplaceable but we are currently weighing our options and will announce them when we are sure of the direction we're heading in. Plans are also underway for a going away party for her to be held in late June. More on that later.

Thurs., 17 Apr., 5pm
Class of '55 Conference Room
Please join us for the culmination of this year's Mashup Contest, sponsored by Penn Libraries, the Cinema Studies Program, and College Houses and Academic Services. The guest speaker for the event will be Leah Kauffman, the singer-songwriter behind several YouTube hits including "I got a Crush on Obama," which now lists over 7.5 million downloads. Ms. Kauffman, a Temple University undergraduate, has created several other viral videos with the group BarelyPolitical.com, as well as on her own. She is an active performer and in 2005 released a full album of her music, "Folk and Fantasy." She will share excerpts from her videos and her insights on what makes a YouTube video successfully "viral," attracting millions of viewers and national attention.

- Amanda Lawhorn 2008 Performance Appraisals
All Professional and Administrative Library Staff:
It is once again time for us to begin the annual performance appraisal process.
For those of you who are new to the University, the Performance and Staff Development Program provides staff and supervisors with a formal process to open lines of communication and promote a productive work environment. It is designed to improve job understanding, promote more effective job performance and establish future goals for career growth. Performance appraisals are required for all regular full and part-time staff to inform and support salary decisions as part of the annual merit compensation program.
I would like to invite all non-bargaining unit staff (especially those who are new to the University) to a training session on the performance appraisal process. This session will give you an overview of Penn's appraisal program, its objectives and format.
Two identical sessions will be held on Thursday, April 10, at 2pm, and Monday, April 14, at 10:30am in the Meyerson Conference Room. Please RSVP by Wednesday, April 9, if you plan to attend. If you are unable to attend either of these sessions and would like to schedule an individual session, please let me know.
The 2008 performance appraisal schedule for the Libraries is as follows:
Wednesday, April 30 – Suggested date for self-appraisals to be submitted to supervisors from their direct reports.
Wednesday, May 28 – Supervisor appraisals are due to me. Appraisal meetings should be completed prior to this date.
Performance appraisal forms and informative materials are available at www.hr.upenn.edu/StaffRelations/Performance/Default.aspx
Should you have any questions or concerns about the performance appraisal process, please do not hesitate to contact me.

- Rachelle Nelson 2008 Library Summer Internship Program
Colleagues,
Planning for the 2008 Penn Libraries Summer Internship Program has begun! See below a message from Carton
The Program selects students from West Philadelphia and University City High Schools to introduce them to the field of academic librarianship and information science during a seven week summer session. This year's program will be held July 8-Aug. 22, 2008. The Interns have enjoyed learning about our profession and interacting with library staff while acquiring new skills that are used during their senior year in high school and beyond. Over the past 3 years, our own staff have impacted the lives of a growing number of young people by mentoring, teaching, encouraging, and supporting their pursuit of higher education.
Will we accomplish our goal of creating tomorrow's librarians and information specialists? Only time will tell. In the meanwhile, let's continue to present our profession as a possible career choice.
Seeking: MENTORS and interested individuals who would like to participate in other ways.
Not sure? Feel free to contact any member of GOLD (Group on Library Diversity) with your questions. We can even put you in contact with past mentors to get the inside scoop. If you're ready to commit, please send me an email by Mon., April 7 as we are trying to firm up this year's participants.
On behalf of GOLD ... THANK YOU!
Gold:
A Message from the Vice Provost & Director of Libraries
I think we should all be very proud of the work the Gold Team and all of the mentors have done over the past three summers to make the Libraries' internship program a success. This is an important initiative in support of a very central goal of ours: to diversify the staff in the Penn Libraries to better reflect the communities we serve. I don't think it is too much to say that this has been a transformational program not only for the wonderful student interns but also those who have been privileged to work with them. I am committed to sustaining this program organizationally and financially but it does need all of your support to make it happen. Please seriously consider becoming a mentor or getting involved in other ways.

Dear Colleagues,
As part of our current trial of the Scopus scientific literature database, Scopus is hosting two Penn Libraries events next week:
Tues. March 25th, 12:45pm-2pm Lunch in the Meyerson Conference Room
Topic: "What Scopus can do for Penn" (as opposed to details of how to search the database).

Wed. March 26th, there will be more casual demonstrations of the product which you are also invited to attend:
Biomedical Library Lounge, 10am-noon OR Van Pelt Library, Meyerson Conference Room, 1:30-3:30.
Refreshments will be served. This would be a great opportunity for a personalized demonstration of the product.
This trial and demonstration are being sponsored as part of the Libraries' task-force to evaluate bibliometric and faculty expertise databases. Members of the task-force are Marcella Barnhart, Danianne
Mizzy, Anne Seymour, and myself (Chair).
Please RSVP to me at bbc@pobox.upenn.edu or 215-898-8874.

Hi folks,
The next Keeping Current Workshop will be Thursday, February 28 from 11-noon in the Meyerson Conference Room of Van Pelt Library.
User-Generated Content
User-generated content has become one of the defining components of Web 2.0. How has participatory media culture made inroads into presentation of library content? How does this support the library mission? Which forms of user-generated content are apt to engage patrons? Charles Cobine will give a presentation and lead discussion about incorporating user content into the library Web presence through personalized user profiles, writing, multimedia, interaction design, and more.
This invitation is extended to all professional and support staff of the Libraries with the usual provision that operational requirements of all units must be met and supervisory approval obtained in advance of the session.
Hope to see you all there.

Doug Smullens Important Password Information from ITadd
As part of our ongoing effort to provide a secure computing environment, the Library has instituted a policy requiring periodic password changes for all users of our computing network. Specifically, we require yearly changes to the passwords used to log on to desktop workstations. A full draft of the policy is available on Staffweb HERE.
The majority of Library staff changed to complex passwords in February and March two years ago and reset passwords this time last year. These passwords will expire in the next several weeks and new complex passwords will need to be selected. At some point soon, after logging on you will receive a message stating that your password will expire in xx days, where xx is a number starting at 14 and counting down. You will be given an option to change your password right away, or wait until later. We encourage users to change their passwords as soon as they have a new one ready.
Helpful links are included below:
• HOW TO CHOOSE A SECURE PASSWORD
• PASSWORD CHECKER
Please contact the helpdesk with any questions.

Richard Griscom Mark your calendars: Conference roundup on Tuesday, 19 February
Greetings,
The Librarians' Assembly will be sponsoring the second of this year's conference roundups on Tuesday, 19 February, at 10:00 in the Class of 1955 Room.
This will be an opportunity to share reports with your colleagues on the meetings and sessions of ALA Midwinter as well as other conferences that you have attended during the past few months.
Conference reports like these used to be presented at Department Heads meetings, but since the reports are of potential interest to all librarians, the Librarians' Assembly offered to host them in a special series of meetings this year.

Anne Seymour Visit to Ghana and request for school supplies and books
Dear Colleagues,
On February 10th I am traveling to Ghana representing the Penn Libraries as part of a Penn delegation. Our primary purpose is to visit the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. We will be establishing new initiatives with KNUST as well as building on existing collaborations between Penn and KNUST. The delegation will also be visiting village schools and hospitals/clinics during our week-long visit and are collecting needed items to donate. One of the delegation members, Anastasia Shown, Assistant Director, African Studies Center, has a relationship with one particular school - she taught at the Tamatoku Basic School in Ada, Ghana, and her husband went to this school as a child. A letter from the headmistress of the school follows this email in which requested school and athletic supplies are requested. I've also attached some photos of the school.
The Penn Delegation has been collecting items for the Tamatoku School and other village schools and I'm asking those of you on the Library staff who are interested to donate items. Books and school supplies (pencils, notepads, etc.) are in great need as well as the other items listed. Anastasia told me that the colored pencils she brought a few years ago are still in use and the students and teachers would love more items like these.
We are accepting any donations through Wednesday, Feb. 6. You can drop them off in Rachelle Nelson's office, NW corner of the IPC, or in my office in the Biomedical Library. If you have any questions about what is needed please let me know.
You'll be hearing more about my trip once I return. Thank you in advance for your support!
