- Arthur Kiron Seth Jerchower
Everyone,
Seth Jerchower, the CAJS Public Services and Judaic Research
and Instructional Services librarian has accepted the position of Head of
the Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica at the University of Florida,
Gainesville. His last day at Penn will be Friday, July 20, 2007.
Seth has worked at the Penn Library since March 1, 2000. Over the course
of these last seven years, Seth has responded to 21,728 reference
questions. He has fixed 10,003 catalog records. He has made 1,325 high
resolution digital scans and he has added 428 electronic resources to our
on-line Judaica collections. Seth made fundamental contributions to the
Penn-Cambridge Cairo Genizah project, helping us link digital images of
medieval manuscript fragments to their cataloging metadata in order to
provide on-line access to individual items physically dispersed around the
world. During his tenure at the CAJS Library, Seth also designed and
edited seven years of CAJS Fellows' web-exhibits and co-curated two of his
own, including a marvelous physical exhibition honoring the 800th
anniversary of the birth of Petrarch, and another about the history of
Rabbinic Lexicography, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the
death of Marcus Jastrow, the father of American rabbinic dictionary
making.
We congratulate Seth on his appointment and wish him continued success in
his career.

- Tom Wilson Arrest of Theft Suspect
All,
All, a big THANK YOU to Sheryl Tisdale for noticing the suspect in the
museum library and alerting security.
Tom
from Captain Joseph D. Fischer:
I am pleased to announce the arrest of the male with the tattoo of a cat on his neck. Yesterday afternoon an alert staff member observed this male inside the University of Pennsylvania Museum Library. University of Pennsylvania Police were immediately notified and apprehended this male as he was attempting to exit the building. Our Detective Division is in the process of preparing affidavits charging this male with additional crimes. The defendant was also discovered to be wanted in the state of New Jersey and will be extradited. This is another example of University of Pennsylvania staff members coordinating efforts with the Police Department to create a safe work environment.
On another note I did receive a correspondence from a University staff member reporting that she is unsure what number to call University of Pennsylvania Police. Our number is 215-573-3333 or 511 FROM ANY UNIVERSITY TELEPHONE. We also highly recommend that the 215-573-3333 phone number be programmed into your cell phones. We are looking forward to our BA meeting on Thursday morning at Huntsman Hall.

Theft Information
Yesterday a student observed a male (with a tattoo of a cat on his neck) going through her personal belongings inside the Van Pelt Library at approx. 1:50pm. When the student approached the male he fled from the building. At approx. 1:55pm a staff member observed a male inside an office at Huntsman Hall and when the staff member approached this male he fled from the building. Unfortunately there was a delay in immediately calling the police which reduced our ability to apprehend these males. Please inform the staff in your buildings to IMMEDIATELY call University of Pennsylvania Police when they observe suspicious behavior supplying us with a description of the person and last location seen. Physical descriptions such as race, approx. age, height, build, and clothing worn are beneficial in attempting to locate suspects. If there is something unique about the person i.e. a visible scar, tattoo, etc. this information will greatly assist our officers in apprehending the subject.

- Dick Griscom Summer renovation of Ormandy Music and Media Center
Greetings,
This summer we are undertaking a major renovation of the Ormandy Center
to provide additional shelving space for our growing media collections.
The areas affected are the staff area, the stacks, and the listening
area (in other words, the left side of the center, as you walk through
the entrance). During the renovation, service to the media collections
will continue uninterrupted, but, because the collections have been
relocated to several rooms outside the Ormandy Center, it will take us a
bit longer to retrieve materials.
In order to provide additional space for collections, we are reducing
the size of the listening area by one half. The remaining space will be
outfitted with new, larger carrels. This work will be done at the end
of the project, and I am told that the new carrels will not be ready
until October or November.
The renovation of the staff area will require the Ormandy Center to be
shut down completely during a week in August. At this point, we believe
that week will be 13-17 August. During that week, circulation staff
will be relocated to room 452 (on the Marian Anderson side of the
Music Library), and service to the general and reserve collections will
be provided from that office.
If you have any questions about the renovation of the Ormandy Center,
please feel free to call me at 898-3450 or write me at
griscom@upenn.edu.

- David Mowl Summer construction activities
Dear Folks,
We are already out of the gate with several of our construction projects, but I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss them with you more fully as their presence makes itself known.
Closure of the Short Title Catalog Room (5th Floor Van Pelt, Room 504)
The Library is providing much needed swing space for the School of Nursing during their renovation work by transfering the photocopied and bound STC collection to High Density Storage. The transfer of the materials is already two-thirds complete, with the remainder moving Friday 5/11. This will allow us to spruce up the room before their needed occupancy in early June.
New Compact Shelving systems, Rare Book Dietrich closed stack
Work is well underway for replacement of three column bays (1800 SF) of static shelving with new mechanically-assisted compact shelving. This project will increase the shelving capacity in the affected area by some 34%. It is vital work to allow for our increased holdings as well as providing a "back of house" infrastructure for the Rare Book & Manuscript Library renovation plans.
The existing shelving is now removed, and concrete preparation and rail installation will follow over the next two weeks. On next Friday, 5/18, concrete delivery and pumping to the 6th Floor construction area will take place. More on our safety precautions for this activity will follow next week.
We anticipate completion of this project by mid-June.
Complete Renovation of Public Restrooms - 3rd, 4th, && 5th Floors, Van Pelt (east) side
Beginning immediately after graduation, the six Men' and Women's rooms on the 3rd, 4th, && 5th floors of VP-DLC will close for complete gutting and re-construction as restrooms fit for the 21st Century! This work is a result of hard lobbying by the Library and is funded by general University maintenance and renewal funds.
The work will proceed through the summer for targeted completion by mid-August. They will be beautiful and a joy to behold for at least the next generation of Penn folks!
Expansion of Music Library closed stack & renovation of a smaller Listening Center
Changes in our Music collection circulation policies and user habits have made the existing Listening Center a less-used space. On the other hand, our Music Library collection and demand continues to expand. This project will reduce the number of Listening Center to six workstations, and reconfigure the Music closed stack to house the larger collection. The architectural motif and finishes of Ormandy will be renewed in a beautiful new architectural interpretation.
The work will begin on 1 June with hazardous materials abatement and continue through the summer until its completion in September. The Music Library will continue to operate throughout the summer from within its disrupted geography in the building, and the Ormandy staff will receive new workstations.
As always, my thanks for your patience and understanding through the dust and noise.

All Professional and Administrative Library Staff:
This is to announce that it is once again time for us to begin the annual performance appraisal process.
For those of you who are new to the University, the Performance and Staff Development Program provides staff and supervisors with a formal process to open the lines of communication and promote a productive work environment. It is designed to improve job understanding, promote more effective job performance and establish future goals for career growth. Performance appraisals are required for all regular full and part-time staff to inform and support salary decisions as part of the annual merit compensation program.
I would like to invite all non-bargaining unit staff (especially those who are new to the University) to a training session on the performance appraisal process. This session will give you an overview of Penn's appraisal program, its objectives and format.
Two identical sessions will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at 3:30pm, and Friday, April 13, at 10:30am, in the Meyerson Conference Room. Please RSVP by Monday, April 9, if you plan to attend. If you are unable to attend either of these sessions and would like to schedule an individual session, please contact me at x3-4361.

- Marjorie Hassen Debut of self-service schedule system for Weigle group study rooms
The library is piloting a self-service online reservation system for group study rooms in the Weigle Information Commons. The room scheduler was developed by John Ockerbloom and his colleagues in iTadd and is linked from the Information Commons web page.: http://wic.library.upenn.edu.
Students can now reserve rooms directly (using PennKey authentication) instead of having to appear in person at the Information Commons service desk. This is a test phase and if all goes well, the next step will be to add study rooms in other library locations to the interface.
Feel free to try out the system (note the instructions and tutorial, developed by Anu Vedantham, adjacent to the "Reserve a Study Room" link on the web page). Since we are in a pilot phase, don't be surprised if you see changes over the coming weeks.
Questions and comments are welcome.

- Mike Winkler Wednesday's Power Interruption
All,
As you may have heard, many parts of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center experienced a power outage about 12:50pm today (Wed) that lasted about 3 seconds. This brief interruption cause several Library services to have problems. The Voyager server required a restart. The network connections for the Library also got knocked out and required intervention by ISC Network Services to restart these services. Two of our services, the authorization services and the image server required more efforts to restore. Staff in iTadd restored most services within 30 minutes of the event, and had restored all services by 4pm.
The cause of the outage was a failure at the PECO Schuylkill substation; it affected buildings on campus and several segments of the University's network infrastructure. ISC reported that all services were restored within 2 hours of the event.
We appreciate your patience during the outages. If you are aware of any other service that has not been restored, please notify the Library Helpdesk (libtech@pobox or 8-4824).
Thanks

- Martha Brogan Penn Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS) grant
The Penn Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society has granted the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, working in conjunction with the University's School of Arts and Sciences, $10,000 to continue developing their joint initiative: "Integrating Information Technologies with the Humanistic Study of Religion and Urban Civil Society in the Middle East."
More information:
Contemporary scholars of the modern Middle East (since the 19th century) continue to seek ways to look beyond the artificial boundaries of nationality and fathom the complex and intimate character of inter-religious group relations in urban settings. At the same time, the academic study of Christian, Islamic and Jewish communities often has been and at times continues to be compartmentalized. The University of Pennsylvania Library, in conjunction with the University's School of Arts and Sciences, has initiated a new, integrated approach to teaching and researching religion and urban civil society in the Middle East. This grant project features three inter-related components: a web interface that provides integrated access to resources about Christians, Jews and Muslims in urban settings; funding to acquire contemporary, multimedia information resources urgently needed for undergraduate teaching and research; digitization, for the sake of access and conservation, to unique primary source rare documents. http://www.prrucs.org/courses/middle_east.html

- John Keane Building Projects
All,
Two building projects are coming up in the next few days.
First, on Friday, March 9, a contractor will be installing valves in the hot water heating system of the Deitrich Building. This work will involve cutting pipe and welding. The contractor will begin in late afternoon and be finished by 10am Saturday morning. While preliminary set-up work will begin at 3pm on Friday, work involving loud noise and odors will not commence until after the building is closed at 6pm.
Second, on Monday, March 12, a contractor will begin installing wet standpipes in the Van Pelt building for fire department use in the event of a fire. On Monday morning the contractor will be drilling in the staff stair tower leading from the rear entrance hallway to the first and second floors. The stair tower will be closed from 7am until noon on that day. If you normally use this stair tower, please use the stair tower that opens into Mark's Cafe instead during that time period. Prior to 8:30 am, a guard will be present to grant you access to the stair tower that is normally locked until 8:30 am. As other work on this project is scheduled, we will keep you informed.
Please direct any specific questions on these projects to me or Tom Wilson.

Voyager downtime Monday
On Monday morning, Voyager will be upgraded to version 6.2. This
is primarily a maintenance release, one that (according to the vendor) will address a number of outstanding system bugs. While Franklin will be available for searching, circulation information will be frozen as of midnight. Voyager staff mode and patron initiated services such as My Account will not be available, however patrons will have access to BorrowDirect+ during this time.
We anticipate all patron/staff services to be restored at noon. This upgrade will require new staff Voyager clients. Installation instructions will be forthcoming on Monday from iTadd.
Alerts will be posted on the Library entry page, departmental web pages, and Franklin.

Changes in public pc access
As part of the library's continuing effort to provide a secure
environment for computing, most of the PCs in the Class of 1964 Look-up
Center (the bank of computers opposite the Reference Desk) now require
PennKey authentication. The northern-most bank of computers (located
nearest the Walnut Street side of the building) will remain open access
at this time and are available for visitor use.
A list of Van Pelt-Dietrich public computers that do not require PennKey
authentication is included in the Library's Visitor Information guide,
available at the Van Pelt entrance guard desk as well as at the
Information and Reference desks (copy attached). We are also in the
process of mounting this guide on the web.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

2007 Education Extravaganza!!
Information Literacy Assessment: Perspectives and Practice
Thurs., May 31, 8:30am-noon

Hi folks,
In keeping with the spirit of collaboration that began with George Needham's presentation at Temple in the Fall, Penn, Drexel and Temple Librarians will all participate in the 2007 Education Extravaganza.

Please join us for a stimulating program on information literacy assessment. Julia Blixrud, ARL Assistant Executive Director for External Relations will provide an overview of the current state of assessment as well as a discussion of the experience of ARL libraries with the Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) instrument.
Alexius Macklin, Associate Professor of Library Science and User Instruction Librarian at Purdue will discuss the development of the Educational Testing Service's Information and Communication Technology Literacy Assessment as well as Purdue's implementation.
The program will conclude with a facilitated discussion during which attendees can pose questions and share their own experience with these and other information literacy assessment methods.

- John Keane Gifts
All,
I am re-sending my message of 11-20-06 because I think some people have forgotten it. Please be advised that if you ignore it you may be personably liable for expenditures for which you cannot be reimbursed!
IRS and University regulations have put certain restrictions on purchases of gifts and prizes that are charged to University accounts. I won't outline the complex policies here, however, before purchasing a gift or prize you must first get written permission from the Senior Business Officer of the School or Center (me). I will review each request and advise if the purchase can be made and, if so, what procedures have to be followed. This would even apply to retirement gifts and prizes to students for contests, etc. This pre-purchase approval is for your protection. Welcome to the new world of accounting thanks to Mssrs. Sarbanes and Oxley.
