The department is responsible for the original cataloging of monographs and serials in print, microform and electronic formats, as well as rare books, DVDs and videos, maps, and non-musical sound recordings, for both Van Pelt and departmental libraries.
Professional staff in the department participate in and contribute authority and bibliographic records to the Library of Congress' Program in Cooperative Cataloging (NACO, SACO, CONSER) and are partners in LC's Electronic CIP program.
